Neonatal Neurodevelopment Services

At SEHA Corniche Hospital, we understand that the first weeks and months of life shape your baby’s future. Babies who begin life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or those born with congenital, physical, or neurodevelopmental conditions often need specialised follow-up care to help them reach their full potential.

Why Choose Corniche Hospital for Neonatal Neurodevelopment & Early Intervention

A Specialized Program for the Most Vulnerable

Our Neonatal Neurodevelopment & Early Intervention Program is uniquely designed to identify high-risk infants early, monitor their progress, and provide timely diagnosis and intervention. By addressing challenges at the very start while they are in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, we minimize the risk of long-term complications and ensure every baby has the strongest foundation for growth and learning.

Comprehensive & Family-Centred Care

We provide ongoing developmental evaluations, detailed assessments, personalized treatment plans and parent coaching, and when needed, referrals to a team of highly skilled specialists in the community. Whether your baby requires support in motor skills, communication, cognition, or social interaction, we guide families every step of the way.

Expert Care, Tailored for Your Baby

Our Board-Certified Neonatal Therapists and Neonatologists co-ordinate each child’s follow-up care, ensuring no milestone is overlooked. If further evaluation is required, we connect you with our Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician, Paediatric Neurologist, or other trusted healthcare professionals within our network.

World-Class Expertise at Every Step

Our dedicated team of a Board-Certified Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Therapist and Neonatologists work hand-in-hand to nurture your baby’s brain development from the very beginning. Care starts right in our NICU, harnessing the power of neuroplasticity to give your newborn the strongest start in life.

Early Detection, Early Intervention

We believe timing is everything. Through advanced diagnostics and highly individualized care plans, we identify even the smallest developmental concerns early and act immediately, starting from the NICU. Our personalized therapeutic programs maximize your baby’s potential and improve long-term outcomes.

Lifelong Developmental Support

Our commitment does not end at discharge. With comprehensive follow-up programs, we support your child’s journey. From cognitive, language, and communication milestones to fine and gross motor skills, we provide continuous assessment, timely interventions, and family coaching—empowering parents to guide their child’s growth with confidence.

Who Benefits from a Neurodevelopmental Follow-Up?

Not every baby who graduates from the NICU will need specialized neurodevelopmental follow-up—but for some, this extra layer of care can make all the difference. Babies who may benefit include:

  • Premature infants born before 32 weeks of gestation and/or below 1.5 kgs
  • Newborns with neurological concerns such as low muscle tone, seizures, or brain bleeds
  • Babies with congenital conditions like clubfoot or heart defects
  • Infants with genetic disorders, including Down syndrome or degenerative neuromuscular diseases
  • Newborns who faced complications such as infections or significant breathing difficulties after birth
  • Other medical conditions or babies at risk of developmental delay referred by our Neonatologists.

Neurodevelopmental Evaluations & Follow-Up at SEHA Corniche Hospital

Every baby deserves the best start in life. If your little one spent time in the NICU and meets the criteria for follow-up services, our highly specialized team will reach out to schedule a comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation.

What to Expect During the Evaluation

Our evaluations are thorough, lasting 60–90 minutes, and you’ll be with your baby the entire time. The session includes:

Parent Interview and Child Assessment

using play, and interactive activities to assess:

General Movements Assessment (GMA)

conducted between (0-2 months) and (3–5 months) of age to detect early signs of neurological concerns.

Comprehensive Neurological Assessment

a standardized evaluation of cranial nerves, posture, movements, muscle tone, reflexes, and reactions.

Full Neurodevelopmental Assessment

tailored to your baby’s corrected age, covering:

  • Cognitive skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Speech & language (both receptive and expressive)

Newborn Behavioural Assessment

to understand your baby’s behaviour, responses, and early interaction patterns.
These assessments allow us to build a clear developmental profile for your baby helping us design the most effective, individualised plan for growth and success.

What happens after the evaluation?

At the end of the evaluation, we review the findings with you, share recommendations for therapy or further assessments, and parents also receive practical strategies to use at home for each developmental stage. We typically recommend follow-up evaluations for ongoing follow-up and Parental Support.
Based on your baby’s developmental progress, he or she may benefit from additional support. At SEHA Corniche Hospital, we ensure every child has access to the right care at the right time through our trusted SEHA network of specialists and community services, which may include:

  • Referrals to physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy and audiology services
  • Referral to Neurologist, Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician, or other specialists as needed
