SEHA, part of PureHealth Group, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, announced the success of the Corniche Hospital team, which is part of SEHA, in dealing with a highly complicated pregnancy case, which ended with the birth of a healthy baby girl despite the mother suffering from severe life-threatening heart failure.
Ms. Asma Al Balushi, in her late thirties and residing in the Northern Emirates, had a complex medical history including congenital heart disease, a mechanical heart valve, several previous heart surgeries, a history of strokes, and morbid obesity. Confident in the expertise and safety of Corniche Hospital, she transferred there for comprehensive prenatal care throughout her nine-month pregnancy, under the supervision of Dr. Salima Wani, Chief Medical Officer and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Corniche Hospital, in collaboration with Dr. Wael Al Mahmeed, a visiting consultant cardiologist from Cleveland Clinic.
In the 31st week of pregnancy, Ms. Al Balushi suffered a life-threatening acute heart failure, necessitating an emergency cesarean section. The procedure was performed immediately at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, utilizing its advanced cardiac services and in close coordination with the obstetrics and gynecology and neonatal teams at Corniche Hospital. The operation was successful, and the baby girl was safely delivered at 32 weeks. The infant was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Corniche Hospital for specialized care, while the mother continued her recovery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.
Deep trust
Dr. Salima Wani, Chief Medical Officer and Consultant Gynecologist at Corniche Hospital, part of SEHA, said: “This exceptional case reflects the deep trust that families from across the UAE place in Corniche Hospital. For nine months, this mother traveled from the Northern Emirates to ensure her case was managed with the utmost safety. Our success in managing this complex pregnancy would not have been possible without our multidisciplinary collaborative culture, advanced clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment to the safety of mothers and newborns.”
A great achievement
Dr. Radwan Ahmed, Head of Cardiology at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, part of SEHA, added: “This case exemplifies the seamless integration between cardiology services at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and obstetrics services at Corniche Hospital to protect the lives of both mother and child. Through meticulous planning and coordination in managing life-threatening complications, we were able to achieve a safe outcome. This achievement reflects the power of multidisciplinary teamwork and the excellence in care delivery across SEHA hospitals.”
This achievement underscores Corniche Hospital’s position as a leading destination for women in the UAE, thanks to its exceptional expertise in managing high-risk pregnancies. The close collaboration between Corniche Hospital and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City also reflects SEHA’s integrated healthcare model, which combines cutting-edge medical science, multidisciplinary teamwork, and meticulous care to ensure the well-being of mothers and newborns.
